Frank van der Salm lives and works in Rotterdam. He holds a degree in geodesic studies from the Delft Polytechnic and a degree in photography from the Rotterdam Art Academy.

Working with a 4 by 5 camera in the spirit of a topographer, he travels Europe in search of found urban and natural landscapes: buildings, expo grounds, roadsides, places in transition. His large-format, high-color photographs hold real and not-real in tension, using direction of view, depth of field, selective focus, color, cropping, and scale to make familiar ground feel peculiar and seductive.

His first solo exhibition opens in 1993. Since then he shows in Switzerland, London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Berlin, Paris, Portugal, across The Netherlands, and in Los Angeles, with group exhibitions also in Milan, Venice, Toulouse, The Hague, São Paulo, Madrid, Frankfurt, and Strasbourg. His work sits in collections including Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas New York, the Seattle Public Library, the Amsterdam HSL-Zuid Photography Project with Atelier HSL/SKOR, the Rijksgebouwendienst, De Leidschen Poort, the Province of Zuid-Holland, and the Institut Néerlandais in Paris.
